FAQ # 008 – Is Lightning More Likely to Strike a Metal Roof?

Faq 008 Is Lightning More Likely To Strike A Metal Roof

We’ve all heard the story of Benjamin Franklin with the key at the end of the kite. Such stories might make one think that metal attracts lightning. There is no truth to that theory.

Metal roofing is no more likely to attract lightning than any other material.

In fact, if lightning does hit a metal roof, it will disperse the force across its surface, greatly reducing the chance of damage to the structure.

What about lightning rods?

If your structure is the highest point around, regardless of roof type, consider a lightning rod. Properly grounded, this can direct lightning away from your roof and reduce the chance of fire due to lightning.
