Protective Barrier When Used Over Shingles

Underlayment has multiple purposes. The first is to serve as a protective barrier when installing over shingles. This keeps it off the rough surface of the shingle. Any of our underlayments will serve this purpose well.

Temporary Protection Until Roof Is Installed

When you are first building your home, your underlayment acts as a temporary protection until the metal roof goes down. 30 lb felt paper will serve this purpose for 2-3 weeks if you use button tabs, depending on the weather. Synthetic Underlayments or Peel & Stick Underlayments will perform much longer, in most cases up to 6 months before the roof has to be installed.

Second Layer of Protection After Roof Is Installed

Underlayment will also serve as a second layer of protection after the roof is installed. 30 lb felt serves only fair in this aspect, as it is a shorter lifespan product as far as weathertightness. The oil embedded in the heavy paper will dry out, causing it to lose it's weathertightness.

They won't break down in UV rays, but instead will retain their weathertightness for years to come. So if there is a raging rainstorm, you can rest assured that not only do you have a quality metal roof above and protecting you, you also have a second barrier against the elements - a quality underlayment.

Protection for Low Slope Roofs

Both Synthetic Underlayment and Peel & Stick Ice and Water Shield are great protection under low slope roofs, where problems are more likely to occur.
